The Gatekept Guide to March
The Smart Girl Thaw, an evening with Marc Jacobs, and the unfashionable human body.
I’m going to be so for real with you…the month of February had me fighting for my life trying to hold onto gratitude. Working exclusively from home, this is usually when I start to lose the seasonal depression battle and accept that I might just be a “bed person” now. Thankfully, the weather is getting tolerable and I will be picking up my warm-weather hobbies (estate sales, museum hopping, drinks on a patio) again.
The March Guide includes visually stimulating, socially defrosting, and psychologically charged experiences. Viewers be advised.
The Cultural Calendar…
- There are four calendar events in March: Daylight Saving Time (8th), International Women’s Day (8th), St. Patrick’s Day (17th, and Eid al-Fitr (20th).
- The 98th Academy Awards are on the 15th. A list of all the nominees and their categories here.
- For my fellow USA Gatekept readers: There are five states with voting primaries for the midterms in March and the upcoming dates are as follows: Illinois (03/17) and Mississippi (03/10). Arkansas, Texas, and North Carolina concluded as of 03/03.If you don’t see your state and would like to make plans to vote in the primaries (Legislative, congressional, gubernatorial, and statewide offices are on ballots in 46 states.) then click here. Midterm elections are Nov. 3rd, 2026. See you there.
Checking in…
In February, we made sure to pencil in a lot of little things to keep us on track. Paired with our preselected outfits for goals, ideally we’re at a place to shake up the routine. I like to do this by using styling tricks I’ve seen on the runways or by ‘recreating’ outfits with items I already own that share just one similarity with the inspo photo. If you have questions on this, leave a comment!
Wardrobe
The Smart Girl Thaw
The real March dilemma is it’s 38° in the morning, 64° by 3pm. My go-to layering fix for this is always white tee + v-neck cashmere sweater or pop of color cardigan + jean or trouser + flats. Is it groundbreaking? No. Is it what I genuinely wear? Yes. Do whatever feels right to you. As for me, I’ll be attempting to add more color into my outfits. I am not naturally good at this. I really love a moody color palette. I did get sort of overzealous and spend a couple hours making a fun mood board that I’m using for inspo, as follows:
Clothing Care Chore
This month is a pretty simple care chore because we’re taking our coats to the dry cleaner. Maybe a button popped off, there’s a tear on the seam of a sleeve, or things are just looking a little…pilly. Your local dry cleaner can address those things before you pack your coats away. Its frustrating to unpack them only to realize you didn’t repair something or they just don’t look (or smell) that great. We want to be happy to get them out and for them to be ready to wear immediately…because lord knows you’ll procrastinate getting them out until the day you REALLY need to wear a coat.
Optional: If you wear fragrance seasonally, considering shifting from your ambers to a greener, brighter scent.
